CUSTOM ENGINEERED
ELECTRO-MECHANICAL SPIDER

The Modi Nochi Spider is a 675kg, fully operational, all electric walking spider, inspired by its venerable predecessor, the Mondo Spider.

It was a private commission, produced in 2023/24 under Tippett’s creative direction, incorporating the advanced technical expertise gained by the Exosapien team from 7 years of mech development to produce an entirely new, re-engineered experience. It uses the same 5-bar “Kaan linkage” as the Mondo Spider to turn rotary motion into a smooth walking gait but this machine carries two passengers in a comfortable cockpit with the driver operating the machine using a precision joystick for effortless fingertip control.

The powertrain is 100% electric, using two 7kW AC electric motors to drive each side of the machine independently, allowing it to move forwards, backwards and turn on the spot with spider-like smoothness. The custom engineered quick-change, fast charge battery system uses two lithium ion packs that each provide up to two hours of runtime and can be easily exchanged for nearly continuous operation. Titanium axles, Cromolly tubing and custom engineered elastomeric composite joints ensure durability, light weight and a smooth ride.

The Modi Nochi Spider was revealed for the first time publicly on stage with Grimes at Coachella 2024! Grimes started her set walking out on stage on the Spider with Jonathan Tippett piloting.
