THE

MONDO SPIDER

UNVEILED IN 2006

BUILT IN VANCOUVER, BC

The Mondo Spider was a direct descendant of the Junkyard Wars team of 2005, of which Tippett was part. Inspired by what could be accomplished in 48 hrs, and with a budget of only $500, and inspired by the incredible art they had seen at The Burning Man Arts Festival in the Nevada desert, many of the JYW team reassembled to see what they could accomplish with a year of dedicated engineering and fabrication, and a substantially larger budget.

The Mondo Spider was unveiled in Vancouver in 2006 at what is now the Emily Carr University Campus. The building it was assembled in has long since been demolished to make room for the unceasing march of progress, but not before it gave rise to the next chapter in Tippett’s journey, the eatART Foundation.

They won a $6000 grant from Burning Man and had a brand new $5000, 25hp Honda engine purchased by Dillard Brinson, lead drive train engineer, Charlie Brinson’s dad. Tippett, project lead Leigh Christie, Charlie Brinson and power train lead Alex Mossman financed the remaining $7000 and together, in a space enthusiastically funded by video game icon, Rob Cunnningham, whom they had just met through team members Ryan Johnston and Sam Meyer, along with an army of volunteers, they produced the Mondo Spider, a 750kg, human piloted, giant mechanical spider, the likes of which had never been seen before.
